Meeting the 4th, 5th and 6th graders at Lakeside Intermediate was exciting. Everyone was excited about the book and full of questions about the writing process. I was treated royally by "Mrs. Peaspanen's Book Club." I had a tour of the school and anything I needed. Thankyou to Jeanette Peaspanen and all the students for making the day special!

ROCKY RIVER BOOK FESTIVAL

Around 50 authors from the Ohio area gathered in Rocky River for an event to benefit the library. We had a lot of fun and sold some books. Above I am pictured with Marilyn Sadler of the "Honey Bunny" and "P.J. Bunny FunnyBunny" books my daughter loves. At the bottom is Shelley Pearsall who wrote the YA books Crooked River and other best sellers. The gentleman pictured, William Price, was a colorful author who wrote about his father's life as a Russian spy and other really adventurous things his family did. And I ate really good potato salad!

This past saturday I had the great pleasure of meeting Abbie. She visited me at Gale's and brought me this great picture signed "your biggest fan." I have to say - I love to write the stories for the writing. But when someone tells you they cried after they read your book and that they were shaking when it was over, well . . . It makes all the effort worth it. Sincere appreciation is worth more than anything for me. Thanks for making my day, Abbie!

I was bombarded with a lot of intelligent questions and even met a aspiring Hollywood businesswoman. Tomorrow I will be at Kent State's English Festival. See you there (maybe.)

I'M BACK FROM ABROAD!

Happy Spring! (OK it's wishful thinking.) Anyway our family was in Italy visiting the in-laws. We were in Sicily which was rainy but not frozen. We ended up taking a boat to Egypt to see the pyramids. We were already 5,000 miles from home. What was a short boat trip accross the Mediterranean and a short bus ride through the desert? We also got a chance to stand on the vulcano Mt. Etna. I brought my laptop to write. . . but with three little kids, lots of wine, and camels. . . well I got a lot of inspiration. And Giuseppe is in the pilot's seat of a small jet in that picture up there.

I am into the second DragonFly novel, however, and will give you updates.

STS JOHN AND PAUL SCHOOL

I had a wonderful day at Sts. John and Paul high school and elementary school last Monday, November 24th. Stephen Robison and Brittany DiMare, the high school president and vice-president (above) were my guides and assistants. They were a lot of help and are two very mature leaders. I met honors society students from SJP and also Geneva and Lakeside. I hope all your exciting dreams come true.

I don't have any speaking plans the next few weeks before Christmas, but the book is still selling well. It is still on-line, at the restaurant, at Ashtabula Giant Eagle and bookstores everywhere. If your bookstore doesn't have it - they sold out and can order it! Contact me if you have any problems procurring it.

What's next? Well right after Christmas I am going to Sicily with my family for six weeks. We will spend time with family and hopefully I will get close to finishing that sequel!! In March I have many engagements - The Kent State English Festival, a conference for Madison Middle School Girls, and an appearance at Eastlake Library.

I was happy to open my e-mail Monday and find out - surprise - I was a finalist for an award in children's fiction! This is a national award which gives out prizes to all the big houses like Hyperion and Simon and Schuster, so to be a finalist coming from Fava Press really excites me. Local author night was a success. I had a lot of fun with poet Dennis Stanfield and Cleveland mayor candidate Kimberly Faith Brown. Being Rosh Hoshana, the crowds were thin in this Jewish neighborhood, but all the seats were filled and the standing area as well. Next week I will be speaking to the MADISON WOMEN'S BOOK CLUB at GALE'S COFFEE CORNER in Geneva at 10 am on Monday the 13th. Then on Wednesday, the 15th, I will be appearing at PLYMOUTH ELEMENTARY's READING NIGHT from 6-8pm. September is coming to a close, and what better way to close it then by doing a local author signing at JOSEPH BETH BOOKSELLERS in LEGACY VILLAGE at 7 pm on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30th. (Yes, the caps are to get your wandering attention to focus on details.) If anyone happens to be out in that area, I'm excited about this signing. After all, the protagonists of THE DRAGONFLY KEEPER, Manuela and Silvia, are GOING TO BE THERE! Yes, for those of you who didn't know it, I based (loosely) the main characters of my novel on my two nieces who are now 14 and 17. Hope to see you there. Maybe they will sign your copy!

SCBWI CONFERENCE

This past weekend, September 5th and 6th, I was able to attend the Northern Ohio Society for Children's Books Writers and Illustrators 2208 Conference in Cleveland. As always, it was great to see so many writers and concentrate only on the craft. I saw my friends Kim and Charlie (above) and Jodi (with camera). Jean Daigneau, the chair, was a energetic organizer. Regina Brooks, president of the Serendipity Literary Agency of New York, gave a wonderful address on Saturday which made me immediately wish she were my agent. Above are pictured the three speakers, Amy Lennex of Sleeping Bear Press, Regina Brooks, and Kritin Daly of HarperCollins. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Now its back to dirty socks and maccaroni and cheese!

THE LEARNED OWL IN HUDSON

O.K, so the author of The Spiderwick Chronicles actually responded to me with a handwritten note of thanks and encouragement! I sent off a book as a gift back in March, not really expecting anything. She seems like a really hilarious and refreshing person, and I hope she does actually read my book and love it. Then, in my craziest imaginings, she will introduce me to an agent who will get me an awesome 6-figure international deal. Hey, someone's dreams have to come true.

CONNEAUT STOCK CLUB AND WESTLAKE BORDERS

On June 3rd, I was welcomed by Conneaut's stock club at the Conneaut Library. Look at all my new readers! And good luck Stella on the baby due this week. (Can you even tell who is pregnant? She looks that good).

Yesterday, June 7th I ventured back to CrockerPark in Westlake to do a signing at the Borders there. It was a great success. Thanks Mark and Milo.

Well, I'm working on closing in on 1,000 books everyone! I'll let you know when I hit the mark. My next signing will be June 27th from 7-8 at The Learned Owl in Hudson. I'll see you there!

VILLA AT THE LAKE IN CONNEAUT

I have to say I was welcomed with open arms by Sue and Julie when I was in Conneaut for a signing on Saturday May 24th. While the residents (it's an assisted living home) ditched me for Bingo, I had a great time talking with people who came in and bought the book knowing I would be there. Thank you to Julie Germovsek and her mother Sue for all the great chat while sipping lemonade and eating crudities.

My next public appearance will be at the Borders at CrockerPark in Westlake on Saturday, June 7th from 1-3pm. I encourage anyone on that side of the big city to come by and say hello. Maybe some of the Harrison Elementary kids in Lakewood might stop by?? Happy Reading everyone!

HARRISON ELEMENTARY VISIT

What fun I have had! I have to say that this bunch of kids (and their teachers) was very welcoming. There were signs all over the school welcoming me and dragonflies flying all over the walls! I met so many wonderful readers and budding writers. I loved all the cards that you made for me.

And thank you to the art teacher, Lyndsay Kaufman, for the most delicious and inspiring cookies I have eaten on my entire DragonFly Keeper tour. (check out the bottom right in the collage above. Yes! BARNES & NOBLE - CROCKERPARK

The next ten days should be a whirlwind. On Thursday I appeared at the Barnes & Noble in Westlake. Monday coming I will be at Harrison Elementary in Lakewood, Ohio. Tuesday I will address the Geneva Women's Business League at Wine Country Books. Thursday I will speak with the Writing Seminar students at Madison High School, and friday I will be visiting Spencer Elementary for Career Day. Then Wednesday the 21st, I will be signing books at Crooked River Bookstore in the Galleria downtown Cleveland. Quite a romp.

As for my website, I will be updating it soon, never fear. For now, however, you can follow along with the blog.

Another great piece of news: The DragonFly Keeper has been chosen as an alternate read for KENT STATE UNIVERSITY'S ENGLISH FESTIVAL 2009!

For all of you out there browsing the internet and reading this, I hope you return to some great reading when you are through. Presently I am reading a few books. The Emperor's children by Claire Messud is about a group of thirty-somethings floundering amid 2001 New York society. While it took me a little to get used to Messud's style of constantly breaking up her thoughts in the middle with asides, the very Henry Jamesiness of the characters and their exchanges is building up nicely.

BUDDING READERS AT WALDENBOOKS

This past Saturday, April 26th, I met many new readers from ages 3 to 83. I am glad that The DragonFly Keeper has found a home in the hearts of such a wide range. Writing it felt like an adventure, and I'm happy to share that with others. There are other books coming, but these next few months are filled with visits and signings. If you are reading this, and I haven't met you yet, I hope to get a chance to soon.

Thursday from 6-8pm, May 8th I will be at Barnes and Noble in Westlake. Then Monday the 12th I will be at Lakewood Elementary, Tuesday the 13th at noon at Wine Country Books in Geneva again for a meeting of the Geneva Business Women, and then Friday, May 16th at Spencer School in Geneva.

The past ten days have been filled with more bookings and visits. I was at Madison Public Library April 16th for "Books and Cooks." I sold my book and sauce from the restaurant and met the family of a long lost friend (Hi Nina!). On April 14th I visited the new Geneva High School and was able to speak with the creative writing class and college bound ninth graders.

Coming up, I will be at Waldenbooks in the Ashtabula Mall this Saturday, April 26th from 2-4. On May 8th, I will be at the Barnes and Noble in Westlake for the book fair of St. Mary of the Falls school. Then on the 12th, I will head out to an elementary school in Lakewood for another book fair. Then, I will be at Spencer May 16th for Career day. On May 21st, Wednesday, I will be at Crooked River Bookstore in the Galleria, downtown Cleveland from 11:30 until 1:30. I hope to see some new faces!

I'M BACK ON-LINE!!

I am an author. But just so you realize that I don't just sit around all day and sip tea (I do like tea) and put my feet up, I included a picture of what my three kids, Giuseppe, Violetta and Dionisio were up to on that one nice day we had last week. Now try to imagine being the one who has to put all three in the shower at the same time to try to make tee-ball practice in time.

Here is the first grade at Assumption. Giuseppe, my son, is the budding Elvis on the drums. (I'm not kidding about the Elvis thing. Elvis is his hero.)

On Friday I went to Assumption School's bookfair. Here I am lounging with my book. What you don't see is Dionisio, my son, running around loose creating havoc.

Ok, so I don't know how to rotate these pictures. Just tilt your head a bit to the left and then the right and you will be O.K. Here is the winning picture at Red Bird Elementary's book cover contest. Thank you Gabrielle for choosing mine!

What fun! Thank you to everyone who came out on such a beautiful sunny day to Wine Country Books for the kick off of The DragonFly Keeper Tour. Pictured above is Cody DeMoss, a fan who has been with the book since its manuscript days.

The day was a success. Of course I went home and collapsed with a fever and felt like someone stuffed my lungs with ice cubes and then sat on me. But yesterday is gone and I am ready to get dressed again. . . soon.

BUMPING GRISHAM

Nothing against John Grisham, but I think I just had one of those moments in life that you don't forget.

I was looking forward to putting up my books in Giant Eagle in Geneva. After all, it IS the only grocery store here. If anyone needs coffee or cereal or ground chuck, they get to walk by my smiling face. I noticed that Grisham's new book was on display in the book section and thought, "I definitely have to take a picture of The DragonFly Keeper set up next to this." But when I went in to set them up, the manager actually moved poor John to behind the shelves so that I could have his spot. Imagine that. Of course, everyone probably already has his book (there were only three left on the display), but displacing a best-selling author in a retail store gave me an egotistical boost I just cannot deny.

THE MODERN LITERARY FORUM

A few years ago, a friend of mine, Jan Perala, invited me to become a member of a book club in Geneva called The Modern Literary Forum. It has been around for 50 years and consists of the city's intelligent and cultured (and fun) women. Many are teachers and business owners. I was honored.

Tonight I brought my book to them and was overwhelmed at their response. I can't thank them enough for the support and goodwill they are showing me. I hope that some day when I am on Oprah, I can bring the group to cheer me on in the audience.

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY VISIT

Today I visited Ms. Thomas' fifth and sixth graders at Washington Elementary. What a great time! They knew so much about the book and the places in it. I especially loved hearing about their favorite parts and characters (it seemed Jiwan and Fritz were very popular as was the part of the worms coming out of the rog's face.) I also want to thank them for the lovely notes and pictures. It is so wonderful to be able to share a story with readers who enjoyed it so much.

VISIT TO WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY TOMORROW

I am very excited to meet the fifth and sixth graders from Mrs. Thomas' class from Washington Elementary. Over the past year they got to have a sneak preview of the manuscript before it was in published form! I can't wait to hear what they think. I will be there Wednesday, March 12th at 9 a.m.

Saturday March 29th I will be at Wine Country Books from 1-4 p.m. signing. It is at 54 Broadway in Downtown Geneva. Hope to see you all there.

On April 16th I will be signing and selling books at the Madison Public Library's annual "Books and Cooks." (I'll probably bring in some restaurant goodies from Alessandro's as well).

SNOW, SNOW BUT THE BOOKS STILL SHOW

The restaurant was closed because of no electricity, my sons are throwing up all over the house day and night from a stomach virus, we are in the middle of the winter's worst blizzard, but . . . UPS delivered my books early! How do they do that?

So if you are in the neighborhood of Alessandro's down on lake road in Ashtabula, you can stop in for a copy (or food!). Or you can now order one from my site. Starting April 1st, you can find them in bookstores across the area. If your bookstore isn't carrying it, ask them to order it through AtlasBooks (that's Fava Press's distributor).

The DragonFly Keeper will be at Alessandro's this weekend, and will be available for order through my site as well. And now I even have my very own promotional poster! I plan on plastering them all over north-east Ohio. (I ordered 1,000 because they were having a sale.)

Hello out there.
The time has been set for the debut signing for The DragonFly Keeper. From 2-4 on March 29th, I will be at Wine Country Books in Geneva, Ohio. I'll be in costume (it's a surprise) and will have refreshments so please come party with the rest of the bibliophiles you know. Look for the posters and articles in the paper next month.

Also the book is arriving! It should be at AtlasBooks by monday, which means I will have copies next week. So you can buy one through the site (autographed for free) or come down to Alessandro's restaurant and get your pre-publication date copy!

Hello to all of you! Thank you for visiting. I'm very excited about the launch of The DragonFly Keeper. Wine Country Books in Geneva will be hosting the first of (hopefully) many bookstore signings. It will be the last weekend in March. When the date is set, I'll let everyone know. The book will also be at Alessandro's restaurant the second half of March so if you just can't wait you can catch it there early.

A very cool bookmark is now circulating with the cover of the book and my website. Maybe even you came here because of it.

I'm still filling in my website so don't feel bad if you couldn't see all the pictures or read an excerpt yet, no one can.

Well I'm hoping this site will evolve into something really exciting. But that's all I can give you for now.
